TechNet California Applauds Announcement of Silicon Valley U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
San Jose Satellite Office Will Streamline Patent Process for Innovators
WASHINGTON, July 2, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- TechNet, the bipartisan policy and political network of CEOs that promotes the growth of the innovation economy, today celebrated the announcement of a Silicon Valley regional branch of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
With 25% of US-origin patents coming from California – almost three times more patent filings than any other state – the San Jose location is well-placed to serve businesses and entrepreneurs. A broad coalition of Silicon Valley CEOs and academic leaders led the push for designation of Silicon Valley as one of the three regional USPTO offices established by the America Invents Act. A letter organized by TechNet to Under Secretary for Intellectual Property David Kappos sent last January outlined the benefits that a northern California USPTO office would hold for both innovators and the USPTO itself.
"With California generating more patents than any other state, it makes tremendous sense to put a regional patent office here in Silicon Valley. Proximity will help emerging growth companies better access the US patent system. And it will also allow the patent system to better understand and support the innovation occurring in Silicon Valley, said Eve Bukowski, TechNet's California Executive Director.
"It's also an example of what can happen when everyone in California – government, academia, business, and consumers – pull together in support of what is good for the state. We are grateful for the tremendous efforts of California's elected leaders who worked together on a bipartisan basis to get this office to California."
