Technology Convergence Enabling Integrated Environmental Monitoring in Addressing Climate Change
NEW YORK, Jan. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- An Assessment of Convergence Possibilities to Monitor Climate Change
Climate change is a topic that is on everyone's lips, particularly after the conclusion of the recent climate talks in Paris. To address climate change, first there has to be climate monitoring. However, monitoring climate change is not an easy process given the area to cover. This requires powerful sensing and communication infrastructure and also require both to go hand in hand. Integrated environmental monitoring (IEM), in which monitoring environment parameters in real time, plays a very prominent role in assessing climate change.
Real time monitoring collects a huge amount of data and hence calls for powerful data storage and processing units. Consequently, to enable integrated environmental monitoring a number of technologies should come together. This study analyzes the different technologies that need to come together and converge to provide the required infrastructure. Technologies such as sensors, energy harvesting, Big Data, and Data Analytics will enable the development of accurate climate models.
The report aims at providing a wholesome idea about IEM, the technologies involved and the impact they will have on IEM and climate change.
Research Scope
Integrated environmental monitoring involves real-time monitoring of various environmental parameters, such as air quality, water quality, and acidity of water bodies, forest cover, polar ice cap cover and so on. Some of these parameters, such as greenhouse gas (GHG) concentration, ocean acidity and forest cover directly monitor and act as indicators of climate change. The GHG concentration, especially that of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, for instance, affects ocean acidity and the atmospheric temperature. It hence contributes toward polar ice cap melting and coral bleaching in the ocean. The forest cover
in turn controls the levels of CO2 in the air, which is considered to be the major contributor toward global warming in the longer run. Methane, on the other hand, is a much more potent GHG, yet it disintegrates into CO2 and water vapor after a certain period of time. Both gases contribute toward global warming.
Thus, environmental monitoring becomes essential to understand and address climate change. Integrated Environmental Monitoring (IEM) is necessary to enable real-time data collection and ensure minimal data loss. IEM also enables climate scientists to act on a particular environmental trend as soon as it is observed and prevent it from further endangering the environment. Various technologies, such as sensors, ICT and data analytics are used to enable integrated monitoring. This research study covers the following topics to provide an overview of various technologies and products that enable IEM. The main purpose is to identify how they converge and the uses derived out of the convergence.
Topics covered include
o Overview
o Technology Convergence
