Climate change is a topic that is on everyone's lips, particularly after the conclusion of the recent climate talks in Paris. To address climate change, first there has to be climate monitoring. Research Scope
Integrated environmental monitoring involves real-time monitoring of various environmental parameters, such as air quality, water quality, and acidity of water bodies, forest cover, polar ice cap cover and so on. Some of these parameters, such as greenhouse gas (GHG) concentration, ocean acidity and forest cover directly monitor and act as indicators of climate change. The GHG concentration, especially that of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, for instance, affects ocean acidity and the atmospheric temperature. It hence contributes toward polar ice cap melting and coral bleaching in the ocean. The forest cover
in turn controls the levels of CO2 in the air, which is considered to be the major contributor toward global warming in the longer run. Methane, on the other hand, is a much more potent GHG, yet it disintegrates into CO2 and water vapor after a certain period of time. Both gases contribute toward global warming.
Thus, environmental monitoring becomes essential to understand and address climate change. Integrated Environmental Monitoring (IEM) is necessary to enable real-time data collection and ensure minimal data loss. IEM also enables climate scientists to act on a particular environmental trend as soon as it is observed and prevent it from further endangering the environment. Various technologies, such as sensors, ICT and data analytics are used to enable integrated monitoring.
