Texas Police Officer's Family Sues Trucking Company for Wrongful Death
Law Offices of Steven C. Laird files suit against Houston-area trucking company, driver
FORT WORTH, Texas, Feb. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A lawsuit has been filed in the death of a 22-year-old Midlothian policewoman who died of injuries suffered in a collision with a flatbed trailer making an illegal U-turn.
Fort Worth truck accident lawyer Steven C. Laird filed the wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the family of Heather Phares against Houston area-based Friendly Transportation LLC and truck driver Dexter Purvis. The lawsuit filed in Tarrant County district court seeks more than $1 million in damages, claiming negligence and gross negligence. The case is Phares, et al. v. Friendly Transportation, et al., No. 096-275836-14. Click here to see the lawsuit and here for related media coverage.
"Heather would still be serving the citizens of Midlothian today if Friendly Transportation and Mr. Purvis simply had followed state and federal laws for operating commercial vehicles, including proper driver training and safe driving," says Mr. Laird, founder of the Law Offices of Steven C. Laird.
Officer Phares suffered massive head injuries on April 17 after crashing into the flatbed trailer driven by Mr. Purvis, who was blocking four lanes of traffic as he was attempting to turn around on West U.S. 287 near Midlothian.
Suffering brain damage and other extensive injuries, Officer Phares died four days later after being removed from life support. She was admired by fellow police officers for her leadership abilities after serving only a year and a half on the job.
Last year, Mr. Laird secured approximately $11.7 million from two Texas trucking accidents, including a case in which a trucker was attempting an illegal U-turn. Mr. Laird is Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law and Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, in addition to being certified in Civil Trial Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
