The 2nd Annual Great Bacon Race: A Boy's Personal Journey over Illness Inspires Family's Non-profit Group to Help other Families Dealing with Medical Complications due to a Child being Born Prematurely
VANCOUVER, Washington, Sept. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Four years ago, Holdyn Hanset was only given a four percent chance of survival, with that came a potential for multiple life long disabilities. He was born at 24 weeks gestation weighing only one pound and eight ounces. His triumph began by surviving the challenges of pneumonias and various surgeries for hernias and brain bleeds before his third birthday. Today, he has achieved many milestones because of his shared inner strength and through the support of his family and community.
"When I learned my son was going to be born prematurely, I knew there was going to be a long journey ahead of him and we needed to know what to be prepared for," says James Hanset, President, of The Great Bacon Race 501(c)3. http://www.thegreatbaconracepnw.com/home.html
"As time passed, I learned a lot about gathering resources and understanding what was available to us and what should not be overlooked. The worst thing a parent can go through is when you are looking for help and someone hands you a pamphlet to go elsewhere," says Hanset.
"The Great Bacon Race was created because I didn't want families to go through what our family went through. The race serves as a platform to raise funds to help provide assistance to families that have children with birth defects to improve their quality of life in the here and now. It also gives children with special needs the opportunity to participate in the race, to either walk run or wheel across the finish line," says Hanset.
"Last year's race was an inspiration for my son Jace, who was born with disabilities. It was the first time he actually crossed the finish line and it gave him a real sense of hope and excitement when he heard the crowd cheer. This year, I'll have Jace in a stroller so we can also participate in the 10K," says Kristin Hayden, race supporter.
The Great Bacon Race 501(c) 3 will be held on Sunday, September 28th at 8:00 AM, at the Pearson Air Museum in Vancouver, WA. There will be Holdyn's Race, a segment dedicated to special needs children, a children's race, 5K, 10K and a half marathon. To support the runners there will be food, vendors, sponsors and surprises throughout the day.
