The Accelerated Schools Break Ground on New Dual Language Campus
LOS ANGELES, April 9, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Accelerated Schools, a charter school community of schools that provides quality pre-K-12th grade education to students in South Los Angeles, broke ground today on a new, $37 million campus for its dual language (Spanish/English) school, the Accelerated Charter Elementary School (ACES).
The new school will consolidate and expand ACES into state-of-the-art Pre-K through 6th grade public school facility, located directly across the street from The Accelerated Schools' main campus. The new facility will more than double ACES' capacity, providing 468 permanent seats for local K-6 students and 96 seats in a new pre-K.
The student population at ACES reflects the demographics of the South Central Los Angeles community that it serves.
"The new ACES campus will anchor the corner of Martin Luther King Blvd. and Main Street, and serve as a beacon of educational excellence in this underserved South Central Los Angeles community," said Johnathan Williams, Founder and CEO of The Accelerated Schools. "The new larger ACES building will now complete our campus, and accommodate the tremendous demand from the community for our dual language immersion program."
Founded in 2004, ACES uses the Gomez & Gomez Dual Language Enrichment model. This program is the only one of its kind in Los Angeles, allowing students to develop English and Spanish literacy skills simultaneously, along with valuable self-expression and multicultural skills.
"The ACES project represents an innovative and sustainable approach to school design and construction on a small urban site," said Eric Johnson, Board President of The Accelerated Schools. "The ACES campus will be certified as a LEED Silver school, making it one of the most environmentally friendly elementary schools in Los Angeles."
