"We wanted a learning platform that would prepare our students for the technological environment at college," said Luke Michael, Director of Technology at The First Academy. "Instructure provides a stark contrast to the traditional learning management system. We chose Canvas because it creates a great user experience."
Before a final decision was made, The First Academy evaluated Blackboard, Canvas and Moodle. It chose Canvas due to ease of use, a cloud-based architecture and full support. The school is also implementing an iPad initiative for over 400 students next year in an effort to better manage their course content through Canvas.
Vital to the school's success is its commitment to parental involvement. The First Academy is planning to use Canvas to host virtual meetings and communicate more frequently with parents.
A new feature of Canvas K-12 is parental co-enrollment. Through Canvas, parents can receive push notifications when their child misses an assignment or has an upcoming test. At any time, they can log in to the system to view their child's grades, assignments and active participation in class. This allows transparent and effortless communication with the teacher.
"Canvas engages parents and helps them take a more active part in their child's learning without adding extra work for the teacher," said Brian Whitmer, Co-founder and Vice President of Product Management at Instructure. "Teachers can spend more time working with students and less time creating notes to parents about due dates, missed assignments and grades."
