LONDON, June 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The oxo alcohols are clear liquids with characteristic odors, composed of carbon chains varying in length from 3 – 15 carbons long. The oxo alcohols are produced by reaction of syngas and an alkane to produce an aldehyde that is hydrogenated to form an alcohol. The majority of the market volume is composed of propylene based oxo alcohols, such as 2-ethylhexyl alcohol, n-butanol and iso butanol. Oxo alcohols find use as plasticizers, coatings, adhesives, solvents and specialty markets.
Environmental regulations have had a significant influence on the oxo alcohol market, with the banning of six types of phthalate softeners diisoctyl phthalate (DOP) in particular has been targeted, having been banned from various applications throughout Europe and North America. DOP has historically been the largest volume plasticizer, consumed into PVC industry. Dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP) has been penetrating the DOP market over the past decade, finding advantage in its status as a terephthalate, as opposed to phthalate. A number of other higher oxo alcohols are also competing with DOP, such as isononyl and others.
This report provides intelligence and analysis on the major volume oxo alcohol, providing details on 2 - ethylhexyl alcohol, n-butanol, iso-butanol, and a higher level view of heavier oxo alcohols up to C15. The reports includes supply sources, demand drivers and trade. The report includes a 5 year history and 10 year forecast for all major producing regions listed below with new capacity additions documented. The report also includes selected end used demand such as plasticizers, solvents, lube oil additives and other applications, making use of intelligence within Petrochemical Reporters data base to obtain a detailed analysis of demand based on derivative consumption. An overview of each of the commercial technologies mentioned will be included in the appendix along with a detailed methodology.
