The Government of Guatemala's Ministry of Foreign Affairs "Global Justice" Program Celebrates Three Years Serving One Million Guatemalans in the United States
MIAMI, Nov. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Legal Assistance, Defense, Protection, and Representation Program "Global Justice" ( aka Justicia Global) of the Guatemalan Government's Ministry of Foreign Affairs celebrates its third anniversary serving an average of one million Guatemalans in the United States. During these three years there have been significant individual victories, which included:
- Landmark decisions in American Jurisprudence
- Family reunifications
- U Visas for crime victims
- Coordinated representation of Guatemalan nationals detained in raids
- SIJ Visas for minors
- Release of the unlawfully detained
- Prevention of deportations
- Ensuring significant medical treatment
- Wage theft settlements
- Extensive media coverage about the need for comprehensive immigration reform and immigrant rights
This program was developed by the Law Offices of Chavez & De Leon PA, which specializes in immigrant rights and has implemented a successful system of strategic alliances allowing Guatemalans to receive representation from prestigious law firms, non-governmental organizations, law schools, and human rights groups that promote immigrant rights. The program reaches an average of 250,000 people a year using institutional videos and printed materials.
The program utilizes the PALMIGUA (Guatemalan Migrant Assistance Portal) website at www.palmigua.com which facilitates a variety of free legal consultations, educational and training tools.
- DREAM ACT. Young Guatemalan students are represented by Justicia Global, such as student Fredd Reyes, who was released when he was about to be deported and managed to remain in the United States legally thanks to the program.
- GUATEMALAN RECEIVES TREATMENT FOR CANCER. A young Guatemalan boy received $1.5 million dollars worth in promised cancer treatment when the facility where he was hospitalized was ready to discharge him leaving him without hope. Efforts from the legal support program resulted in the hospital to care for this young boy.
"The Justicia Global program is essential to ensure the protection of the rights of Guatemalans during these difficult times for the immigrant community in the United States. We will continue to fight so that every Guatemalan national will have information, education, support and legal assistance, so their rights will be respected. Their cases will stand as examples so the rest of the community can see the need for real immigration reform," said attorney John de Leon, Director of the program.
