The Great Canadian Sales Competition Looks to Curb Unemployment Rate for New Graduates
TORONTO, Nov. 25 2014 /CNW/ - Google, Facebook, Dell and other $Billon companies sponsor The Great Canadian Sales Competition, the largest national sales contest for university and college students in 2015. Why? Canada's students are faced with a challengingly high unemployment rate that is twice the national average, and they rarely consider sales a potential career path despite it being one of the fastest growing roles nationally. At the same time, companies are struggling to find educated and talented sales professionals. This innovative competition educates young Canadians on sales as a career option, and connects them with potential employers for mutual success.
When looking at the struggles students are facing today, we find that approximately 58% of Gen Ys will receive a Bachelor's Degree and without enough jobs to support Canada's educated youth, 48% of employed graduates work in jobs that don't require a four-year degree. The statistics don't just stop there: 63% know someone who had to move back home because of financial stress; the average student loan for students across Canada is 27,000; 14.3% is the unemployment rate for new graduates.
Jamie Scarborough, Co-Founder at Sales Talent Agency says that after travelling across the country to speak to college and university students, he's found that the perceptions of sales a career are very consistent: people want to go into finance, marketing HR or other business divisions, but very few consider sales. After visiting schools across Canada and highlighting the income potential, career trajectory, and entrepreneurial possibilities with a sales career, students are seeing sales in a completely different light. One student from BCIT says that they "even added sales into their spectrum of possibilities for future employment because of [Jamie Scarborough's] presentation" titled: Canada's Highest Paying Jobs (that you're not even considering). The Great Canadian Sales Competition team has travelled to schools including: BCIT, UBC, University of Toronto, Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College (just to name a few).
