The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation Seeks to Fuel Industry Expansion Through Scholarships
Over $30,000 awarded to twenty-six students at seven schools
COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation, which has promoted insurance and risk management education since 1947, has awarded $31,700 in scholarships to twenty-six students at seven colleges and universities. The scholarships support students studying risk management, insurance or actuarial science.
"Every academic year these scholarships ensure a rich talent pool for the industry going forward," said Jason Terrell, The Griffith Foundation's Director of Education. The Foundation's own research has shown increased pressure to fill career demand in the industry. Terrell cited The Semi-Annual Insurance Labor Market Study released this month by The Jacobson Group and Ward Group as another indicator that continued promotion of the field is needed to prevent talent gaps. The study contends that insurance industry employment is set to grow at the fastest rate since the recession began, with 50% of all insurance companies planning to increase staff during the next 12 months. The study notes that the projected surge will be driven primarily by increased business volume.
As a non-profit organization, The Griffith Foundation provides financial support, education materials and programming for insurance education at the K-12 and post-secondary level. Another area of emphasis is education for public policymakers to support informed legislative decisions.
"Insurance provides incredible career opportunities for a diverse range of interests and abilities. We're pleased to support the current group of scholarship recipients as they prepare for their own careers in the industry," adds Terrell.
Scholarships were awarded to students at these institutions, all of which offer insurance related degrees or courses:
- The Ohio State University
- Defiance College
- Bowling Green State University
- Ball State University
- Capital University
- Ohio University
- Florida State University
The Griffith Foundation oversees multiple scholarship opportunities annually. In addition to risk management, insurance and actuarial science majors, eligible applicants include business and non-business majors who make a commitment to take risk management and insurance courses. Some scholarships have institutional, geographic, or other special eligibility requirements and varying deadlines.
