WASHINGTON, May 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- His Majesty the Emperor of Japan Akihito will confer upon former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives J. Dennis Hastert, also senior advisor at Dickstein Shapiro, the Imperial Decoration, Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun. This recognition honors his contributions to the enhancement of goodwill and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States and will be presented at a conferral ceremony taking place at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan on May 7, 2010.
The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun (Kyokujitsu Daijusho in Japanese) is Japan's oldest decoration and one of the highest honors that can be conferred upon a foreign national. It was established in 1875 during the Meiji era.
"Former Speaker Hastert's remarkable leadership role in promoting the exchange of ideas between Japan and the United States is one that he continues to actively build upon," said Michael Nannes, Chairman of Dickstein Shapiro. "This singular distinction recognizes his invaluable contributions to both our nations."
Mr. Hastert served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from January 6, 1999 until January 3, 2007 and was the longest-serving Republican Speaker in history. He was elected to the House in 1987 and served Illinois' 14th Congressional District. During his 20 years in the House, Speaker Hastert worked to further advance Japan-U.S. relations and he continues to provide guidance to the Congressional Study Group on Japan.
