The Last 1049 Miles: Female Survivor Will Complete an Inspiring Journey in "The Last Great Race on Earth"
CHISTOCHINA, Alaska, Feb. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- With a little help from the kindness of others, Heidi Sutter will compete in the 2015 Alaskan Iditarod. "A race covering 1000 miles of the roughest, most beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer... jagged mountain ranges, frozen rivers, dense forests, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast..." (iditarod.com)
Heidi is honored to have been chosen, as part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, to be the musher for a young girl named Ally that is battling cystic fibrosis. Ally will fulfill her "wish" by riding with Heidi for the first leg of the race.
Heidi was born in Maine. After High School she moved to Alaska and graduated with honors from a Presbyterian College. Despite her loving family and education, she became a victim of domestic abuse and ended up homeless. Many stories like Heidi's end up tragic, but by a twist of fate her life was saved... by a team of dogs... and they are determined to reach glory together at the finish line in Nome, Alaska next month.
Heidi is also the proud mom to Emily, who will be 18 this year. They share the love of dog mushing & train together.
When she is not teaching, sewing furs, or performing mom duties, Heidi is training and racing sled dogs. Last year Heidi raced in the Copper Basin 300 placing 12th, Yukon Quest 300 placing 3rd, the Kobuk 440 placing 10th, and the Solstice 100 placing 10th.
Crossing 1000 miles of Alaska's unforgiving wilderness requires a powerful bond between a woman and her dog team. They depend on each other for survival. Many who enter do not finish the race.
You can help Heidi realize her dream and Ally get her "wish" by supporting them with a donation as little as $1 at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/66-legs-to-nome-or-bust. You can link from there to the KMA Kennel website where you can read about each dog and even sponsor one if you like.
