National research foundation will host FREE seminars in Naples and Palm Beach Gardens on age-related macular degeneration to provide information on the latest research, treatment and technology for vision impairment.
CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Nov. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Macula Vision Research Foundation (MVRF), a leading national nonprofit focused on funding research to find a cure for macular degeneration and other retinal diseases including childhood blindness, will host FREE SupportSightSM seminars on age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is the leading cause of blindness in people over 50. Currently, 15 million Americans suffer from this eye disease. This number is expected to reach 20 million by the year 2020 due to the aging baby boomer population.
The free seminars will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon at the Edgewater Beach Hotel located at 1901 Gulf Shore Blvd N. in Naples and Friday, December 5, 2014 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at PGA National Resort and Spa located at 400 Avenue of the Champions in Palm Beach Gardens.
These seminars will include information on the latest treatments and care of AMD. Xcovery Vision, an ophthalmology-focused subsidiary of Tyrogenex, Inc., a clinical-stage company developing novel therapies for cancer and ophthalmic diseases, will be presenting a possible new treatment. "I am excited to share information about our potential new oral therapy," says Teri Swift, Co-Founder and VP Business Development. An oral therapy that replaces 6 to 12 injections per year would make the lives of individuals with AMD so much easier and less stressful."
Family members, caregivers and patients, all affected by AMD, will have the opportunity to connect with healthcare professionals and other experts. "At the SupportSightSM seminar, I look forward to sharing my 19 years of experience caring for AMD patients and I'll give everyone a glimpse of the future and the exciting new therapies on the horizon," says Philip J. Rosenfeld, MD, PhD, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and MVRF International Scientific Advisory Board Member.
Over the past 17 years, the program has served more than 35,000 people all over the country.
The SupportSightSM program is provided through the generosity of our sponsors: Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, McDonald's Corporation and Optelec U.S. Inc.
