The REAL Program Presents the Legacy of Teaching Institute for Early Childhood Educators
LYNN, Mass., Feb. 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Attention teachers of young children: The REAL Program invites you to the annual Legacy of Teaching Institute for Early Childhood Educators, to be held on Saturday, March 7th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Riverside Elementary School, 95 Liberty St., Danvers. This year's theme is Harold Meets STEAM and features keynote presenter Todd Bol, founder of The Little Free Library Movement. Register at www.therealprogram.org.
2015 marks the 60th anniversary of the timeless children's classic, Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson. STEAM is the initiative to strengthen the subjects of science, technology, engineering, arts and math in our education. Workshops include the Little Free Library Movement and subjects such as, What if Harold Could Tweet?, Harold Learns How to be a Friend, and Journey through the Harold Series.
Workshop presenters include Mass Literacy Champion Maureen Manning; Dr. Susan Zoll of Rhode Island College; award-winning teachers Kim Staples and Leslie Cole; internationally-acclaimed puppeteer, Judith O'Hare; Rachel Shwartz of Manchester's Magic Years Cooperative Nursery School; founder of Brio Integrated Theatre, Sahar Ahmed; and education leader, Lisa Cheney. A pop-up store from EXTRAS for Creative Reuse offers upcycled and recycled materials.
The REAL Program (Reading~Educational Assistance~Learning) is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to improve literacy. We do this through direct work with underserved populations of children and families in Lynn and through supporting teaching and learning communities in our region. We need to raise awareness and provide more literacy opportunities for children, families and teachers. The REAL Program employs a service-learning model to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for retired teachers and professionals and quality service-learning opportunities for high school and college students.

The REAL Program provides books, tutoring and educational programs in Lynn during the academic year and operates a literacy-based summer program for children in grades K-5. The REAL Mobile collects and distributes children's books, nutritious food, and resources through volunteers in the greater Lynn area. The REAL Legacy Institute provides literacy-based teacher training for early childhood educators.
