The Wireless Foundation Releases Report on Wireless Solutions that Reduce the Transportation Sector's Environmental Impact
Incorporating wireless products and services into transportation sector reduces environmental impact.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Wireless Foundation released a report this morning examining wireless solutions to reduce the environmental impact of the transportation sector. Produced by BSR, Advancing Environmental Sustainability in the Transportation Sector: The Role of Wireless Technologies looks at ways business and consumers adopted wireless technologies to reduce costs, cut carbon emissions and improve reliability. The report documents wireless technology's positive environmental impacts on fleet vehicles, commuting options, connected vehicles and smart parking. A number of case studies demonstrate the cost savings and improved sustainability that companies enjoyed after incorporating wireless solutions into their business operations. The report was presented at "Wireless Technology and the Transportation Sector: Creating Opportunities for Environmental Sustainability," a conference sponsored by The Wireless Foundation that also featured policymakers as well as executives from the wireless industry and transportation companies.
Key findings include:
- The deployment of wireless fleet management systems could save up to 80 million metric tons CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) globally by 2020.
- Wireless solutions enable explosive growth in car sharing, removing an estimated 156,000 cars from American roads, and reducing CO2 emissions by 0.749 million metric tons—the equivalent of the electricity use of 103,027 homes for one year.
- Smart parking solutions could reduce search time for parking by one-third in congested neighborhoods, which would likely cut total traffic in those areas by at least 10 percent and significantly reduce air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions fuel use and wasted time.
"From smarter commuting to connected fleet management, wireless technology empowers consumers and businesses to adopt greener practices, which reduces carbon emissions and lowers costs at the same time. Thanks to the U.S. wireless companies' constant innovation, wireless products and services are making significant impacts to streamline operations, reduce environmental impact and create a sustainable environment," said Steve Largent, President of The Wireless Foundation and President and CEO of CTIA-The Wireless Association.
