Here are highlights from Monday's Analyst Blog:
Google Adds Design Capabilities with Gecko Buy
Google Inc. (Nasdaq:GOOGL-Free Report) recently acquired Gecko Design, a hardware design company, to add product-design talent to Google X, its research division. Gecko's team of 5 members including its president will join Google X next month. However, the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Google X is run by co-founder Sergey Brin and is responsible for Google's moon shot projects including Google Glass, Iris, Project Loon and its forthcoming driverless car.
The integration of Gecko's product development and mechanical engineering expertise into Google X will help Google focus on the physical design of its ambitious products as it goes beyond software.
Gecko, a CA-based company founded in 1996, designs consumer-electronic products and its clients include FitBit, Logitech, Sonos, Dell and Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ-Free Report).
Of late, large companies including Facebook (Nasdaq:FB-Free Report), Samsung, IBM (NYSE:IBM-Free Report) and General Electric (NYSE:GE-Free Report) have been investing heavily in design divisions either by acquiring design firms or by building their own design-focused talent.
Therefore the latest addition will help Google offer some edgy product design for its ambitious moon shot projects and attract more customers.
Google is a stable company with consistent revenue growth and profitability. It remains the dominant player in search across desktop and mobile platforms. To add to its capabilities and bolster its existing businesses, Google continues to acquire smaller companies with specialized technology and/or strong presence in chosen markets.
It recently acquired Jetpac Inc., an app exclusively available on Apple's iOS for analyzing photos on the Internet to create city guides.
However, the impact of its acquisitions is not clear because Google usually keeps them small and says little about them. Google is however not the only technology company indulging in a large number of acquisitions. Other technology companies like Apple, Facebook and Yahoo have done the same.
Google currently holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
