Tinder Debunks Modern Dating Myths In First-of-its-kind Survey Comparing Online And Offline Daters

LOS ANGELES, April 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- If you're not on Tinder, you're doing it wrong, according to a national survey. Tinder, the world's most popular app for creating meaningful connections, today announced results from "Modern Dating Myths," a first of its kind survey that unveils millennial dating habits by comparing experiences between online and offline daters. The survey shares key differentiators around fidelity, communication, perception and mindfulness.

The Modern Dating Myths survey is the largest of its kind, capturing responses from over 9,000 U.S. men and women, comparing and contrasting their dating-related habits on and offline. "Over the past five years, dating apps like Tinder have played such a significant role in connecting people for the long term. While hesitation to use Tinder might stem from negative preconceived notions, we've actually proven that singles will find just as much, if not more, success using dating apps than dating solely offline," said Dr. Jess Carbino, Tinder Sociologist. The Modern Dating Myths survey discusses the following dating myths and more:

Myth #1: Dating apps? Ugh. Not for me. They've totally ruined dating for the rest of us.
People who date online are likely to have more committed relationships than those who do not date online. Only 9 percent of Tinder users report that they find it challenging to maintain a committed relationship; significantly lower than the national average.

Myth #2: Keeping a conversation on a dating app is like pulling teeth, and don't even get me started on ghosting!
The survey also shows that online daters don't need a pick-up line; they are conversationalists who show an interest in others. Only 16 percent of singles who have never online dated and don't plan to report opening a conversation with an observation versus nearly 30 percent of those who have previously dated online. When initiating conversations, offline daters are nearly 10 percent more likely than Tinder users to initiate with a generic opening.

Myth #3: The only way anyone finds success on dating apps is by being really, really ridiculously good looking.
For Tinder users, age and education are the top two most important factors, with appearance ranking third when considering a potential date. And, both singles who have online dated in the past and offline daters hold education as an important factor when considering a potential date.

Myth #4: People who online date are just looking to hook up and are all about sharing… STDs, that is!
When it comes to protecting their mental and physical health, online daters are far safer than those who date offline. Nearly 70 percent of Tinder users always use condoms when having sex for the first time with a new partner; this compares to the 58 percent of their offline dating counterparts who report the same.

Other topics covered in the study include data surrounding how soon online daters say "I love you" versus their offline counterparts, who send more nude photos between online and offline daters and the difficulty of maintaining committed relationships for online versus offline daters. About the Survey
Research findings are based on two separate surveys. One nationally representative study of Tinder users conducted by Tinder across the U.S., fielded in the first two weeks of February 2017. For this survey, adults ages 18 - 36 were asked various questions regarding relationships and dating. The study included 7,072 users. The survey was distributed  and administered via the app.

An additional survey conducted by Morar Consulting fielded across the U.S. between January 27, February 3, 2017. For this survey 2,502 U.S. adults aged between 18-35 were asked various questions regarding their past relationships, meeting people, and dating life. Respondents are recruited through several different mechanisms, via different sources to join the panels and participate in market research surveys. All panelists have passed a double opt-in process and complete on average 300 profiling data points prior to taking part in surveys. Respondents are invited to take part via email and are provided with a small monetary incentive for doing so. Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. In this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 % percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
