Nebraska Unicameral Resolution, Governor Proclamation Honor Strong State Relations with Canada
MINNEAPOLIS, March 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature passed a resolution, and Governor Heineman issued a proclamation, both honoring the state's economic and social ties the state shares with Canada and declaring it "Canada Day at the Capitol."
"We are the closest of friends, neighbors, and allies," said Consul General Martin Loken, Canada's top diplomat in the Upper Midwest. "Canada and the United States have a relationship that is unique in the world -- and particularly relevant to Nebraska. When it comes to business, Canada is Nebraska's number one customer. Our economies are intertwined, and that's a benefit for both of us."
Trade between Canada and Nebraska totaled $2.6 billion in 2008, making Canada the state's top export market. That same year, Canadians made over 75,000 visits to Nebraska and spent $25 million. Over 49,750 jobs are supported by Canada-U.S. trade.
"The Nebraska Legislature is looking forward to celebrating Canada Day at the Capitol on March 15, 2010 and hosting Consul General Martin Loken for the day. Nebraska relies heavily upon our trading relationship with Canada and this allows us an opportunity to celebrate and support that relationship with our neighbor to the north," said Speaker Mike Flood.
"Canada values our close relationship with Nebraska. We are honored to be at the Capitol today and to have legislators recognize our strong partnership," added Loken.
Loken is appointed by Canada's Prime Minister to represent the Government of Canada in the Upper Midwest region. Located in Minneapolis, Canada's Consulate General works to promote trade and investment links, to engage citizens and decision-makers on matters of shared interest, and to assist Canadians living and traveling in the US. 2010 is the 40th anniversary of the Consulate General's presence in the Upper Midwest.
