LOS ANGELES, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Dangerous chemicals are plaguing the Carousel neighborhood in Carson, CA, that was built on site of what was once a Texas-headquartered Shell Oil Co. (NYSE: RDS.A) tank farm that stored more than 3.5 million gallons of crude oil. See Today's front-page LA Times story here:

Experts say the chemicals cause cancer, neurological damage, birth defects and other health effects. Attorney Tom Girardi of the law firm Girardi-Keese is leading the neighborhood residents' litigation against Shell.
Recent testing led by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board revealed extreme levels of carcinogenic chemicals, including Benzene, contaminating the soil and groundwater, and dangerous and possibly explosive levels of methane gas, underneath the 285-home, 50-acre neighborhood.
According to the Times article, "tests found benzene at concentrations seldom seen, levels that could significantly increase cancer risks for residents."
An official with the Center for Health, Environment and Justice, the Times reported, said the level of benzene found in the neighborhood "boggles my mind" and "poses serious risks for homes and any place where it could reach the public."
Residents in the neighborhood have been warned to avoid contact with the soil in their yards. Some homeowners in the area have seen a tar-like liquid seeping up through their lawns and live with the pervasive smell of gasoline in their homes.
