Tremont & Sheldon Sues Reverend Charles Stubbs and the Diocese of Bridgeport and Encourages Other Victims Across Connecticut to Come Forward

BRIDGEPORT, Conn., March 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Tremont & Sheldon P.C. has filed a lawsuit against Reverend Charles Stubbs and the Diocese of Bridgeport. The firm has represented numerous victims of Reverend Charles Stubbs whose privileges were revoked in 1997.

This lawsuit is significant because a prior complaint of sexual abuse against Reverend Stubbs was made before the abuse in this case to then-Bishop Walter Curtis

"The Diocese of Bridgeport had actual notice that Reverend Stubbs had attempted to sexually abuse a minor yet continued to allow him unfettered access to children in the Diocese," said Jason Tremont, the attorney representing the victims.

The lawsuit was based upon a claim of sexual abuse by Stubbs against plaintiffs who were minors in the 1970's while Stubbs was assigned to St. Mary's Parish in Ridgefield, Conn. Reverend Stubbs served at St. Mary's Church in Ridgefield, Conn., from 1976 through 1991 and St. Mary's Church in Greenwich, Conn., from 1991 through 1996. He was forced to retire from St. Mary's in 1996; however, in July 1997, Cardinal Edward Egan brought him out of retirement and appointed him assistant pastor of St. Rose of Lima Church Newtown.  Later in 1997, he was suspended for admitting to molesting a boy.

Currently under Connecticut law, any person who claims damages as a result of being sexually abused, sexually assaulted, or sexually abused as a child has until 30 years past the age of majority (until age 48 typically) in which to file a claim in court.

Tremont & Sheldon continues to seek additional victims of Reverend Stubbs, and Attorney Tremont is available to discuss the specifics of individual cases.
