"The Twin Cities continue to experience an extremely tight candidate market with more permanent technology positions available than candidates to fill them," said Kathy Northamer, Twin Cities district president of Robert Half Technology. "IT hiring activity is strongest within the professional services and healthcare sectors. Most notably, security needs have intensified due to data breaches, resulting in increased demand for IT professionals with cybersecurity skills, including penetration testing, vulnerability scanning, firewalls and risk assessments."

Hiring forecasts are based on interviews with more than 2,500 CIOs from 25 major U.S. markets who were asked to provide a six-month hiring outlook.

Recruiting Challenges & Skills in Demand

Hiring challenges still remain, as 56 percent of CIOs said it's somewhat or very challenging to find skilled IT professionals today. They also revealed the skills in greatest demand within their organizations, which include:

  • Desktop support (58 percent)
  • Windows administration (53 percent)
  • Database management (52 percent)
