Two Met-Ed Employees in Reading Celebrate 50 Years of Service
READING, Pa., Oct. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Fifty years ago, the Beatles made their American debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show," and Ford introduced the first Mustang. The year 1964 also was when Michael P. Kirkhoff and Nina L. Beverly first began working for Metropolitan Edison (Met-Ed), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE).
Kirkhoff began his career with Met-Ed in April 1964 as a student trainee from Drexel University. He began working full-time in August 1964 as a designer for transmission projects. Over the course of his 50 years with the company, Kirkhoff also has worked in the Substation Engineering group, where he currently designs those facilities. In addition, he has worked as a technician at Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station and as a boiler room attendant at the Titus Power Station, both previously owned by Met-Ed. Kirkhoff resides in Reading.
"There have been so many changes during my 50 years and all of them are designed to help improve service for our customers," said Kirkhoff. "When I started there were no computers so we did everything by hand. Today, utility employees have access to all kinds of advanced technology. Our basic job, however, remains the same today as it was 50 years ago – working each and every day to keep the lights on for our customers."
Beverly began her career with Met-Ed in September 1964 as a typist in the company's stenographic pool. During her 50 years of service, Beverly has held a variety of typist and clerical jobs throughout the company. She currently is a senior clerk in Met-Ed's Fleet Services group at the company's Pottsville Pike facility. Beverly resides in the Shillington area.
Kirkhoff and Beverly are both members of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 777.
"We are proud to celebrate and honor not one, but two employees who are both celebrating 50 years of dedicated service to FirstEnergy and its predecessor companies," said Dave Karafa, president of Pennsylvania Operations for FirstEnergy. "It is rare today to have an employee work 50 years at the same company – and rarer yet to have two employees work 50 years. Nina and Michael are great examples of dedicated employees who enjoy their work and continue to make valuable contributions to our company."
