Two Month Campaign to Attract Endorsements for the Teachers' Code for Ethical International Recruitment & Employment Practices
Alliance for Ethical International Recruitment Practices is leading a push for endorsements of the Teachers' Code for Ethical International Recruitment & Employment Practices. The Code does not state whether a district should or not use international recruitment; rather, recognizing that there are 90,000 international teachers in the U.S. and that more may be recruited as teacher shortages worsen, it aims to ensure that such recruitment is fair and ethical.
PHILADELPHIA, April 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- This week, the Alliance for Ethical International Recruitment Practices, a division of CGFNS International, Inc., launched a two-month campaign to raise awareness of and obtain endorsements for the Teacher's Code.

A Task Force composed of employers, educators, unions, and visa sponsors developed the Teachers' Code to ensure that, if districts choose to use international recruitment, that qualified, well-treated teachers are placed in classrooms. The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the National Education Association (NEA), and VIF International Education, the largest J-1 visa sponsor for teachers, have endorsed the Code and participated in its development.
Anticipating getting commitments from districts at the beginning of the next school year, the Alliance wants everyone— including school districts, parents, students, and the general population—to demonstrate support for the Teacher's Code.
"We developed the Teachers' Code not to address whether or not districts should recruit migrant teachers; rather, we want to raise awareness so that recruitment is legal, ethical, and in the best interests of students," said Mukul Bakhshi, Director of the Alliance.
"The Teacher's Code is an acknowledgement that individuals have a right to migrate in pursuit of improved working conditions and expanded professional opportunities," said Dr. Lora Bartlett, Head of the Teacher's Code Steering Committee. "We are encouraging individuals and organizations nationwide to adopt the Teachers' Code and spread the word on the Teachers' Code."
