Tyler Attorney Randell C. Roberts Pays Special Final Tribute to High School Debate Coach
TYLER, Texas, June 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- It's not uncommon for students to give special tributes to their former teachers during graduation season. However, Tyler attorney Randell C. Roberts chose a most uncommon way to give a final tribute to his former high school debate coach.

Alan Shumate was a legendary Texas high school speech and debate coach. During his tenure at Robert E. Lee High School in Tyler, his students won championships in all fields of debate and speech competition. One of his championship debaters was Randell (Randy) Roberts, who became a nationally recognized personal injury trial attorney.
When Alan Shumate passed away, one of his last requests was that Randy Roberts speak at his funeral. Roberts obliged, but he did so by holding a debate about Alan Shumate in front of the funeral service audience.
This debate, perhaps the first of its kind at a funeral, was captured on video and has been posted on YouTube. It is one special tribute to a former teacher and mentor that no one should miss.
Randell Roberts and his brother, Bruce Roberts, were both students on Alan Shumate's high school debate teams. They eventually formed the East Texas personal injury law firm of Roberts & Roberts. Shortly after the law firm was established, Randell Roberts received local recognition for obtaining the county's largest wrongful death settlement at that time. He has since been recognized in Time, Newsweek, Ladies Home Journal, and the Texas Lawyer as well as on CNN and NBC's Dateline for his role in uncovering the documents that led to the recall of the Firestone Radial ATX and Wilderness lines of tires.
Randell Roberts' groundbreaking case against Firestone is featured in McGraw-Hill's college textbook on corporate crime entitled Criminology and the Criminal Justice System. Because of his role in important product liability cases, he has appeared on "Fox & Friends," ABC's "Good Morning America," CNN's "American Morning," MSNBC, Fox Business News, "Geraldo at Large," and CNBC. Randell Roberts continues to be consulted on current legal issues by The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Business Week, Bloomberg News, and the Associated Press.
