Rideshare Platform Offers Goodwill Donation Pick-Ups, Free Rides Around Town
EDMONTON, Dec. 18, 2014 /CNW/ - Uber Canada introduced its highly popular ridesharing product, uberX, to the City of Edmonton, Alberta today by offering free rides and Goodwill donation pick-ups. The launch was made official with former Edmonton Mayor Bill Smith taking the first ride: blog.uber.com/riderzeroEDM.
"It's great to see innovative and new business models like Uber come to Edmonton," stated former Mayor Bill Smith. "I've always believed that embracing change is the best path to success. Uber's technology will create opportunity and more transportation options for our citizens, helping this city continue to grow."
Edmonton joins the ever-growing list of smart cities that offer ridesharing, becoming the fifth Canadian location to welcome Uber. More information on Uber in Edmonton can be found here: blog.uber.com/uberXEdmonton.
"Uber's arrival in Edmonton marks an exciting moment for the residents of Alberta. By providing a service that responds to the needs of today's riders and drivers, we are helping advance the way people and cities move," said Jeff Weshler, General Manager of Regional Expansion for Uber Canada. "Not only does Uber's technology connect users with a ride whenever and wherever they need one, but it also provides a platform for doing good – which we are demonstrating today through our local partnership with Goodwill."
The Goodwill-Uber partnership offers on-demand pickups of winter clothing donations in Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Toronto today, from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM. For more on how to donate, see: blog.uber.com/UberClothingDrive.
"Riders and drivers are quick to realize the magic and efficiency of the Uber platform, and we are eager to further highlight the benefits of this innovative technology with public officials. Working toward a new and progressive regulatory approach that expands transportation alternatives, ensures public safety and promotes innovation in the best interest of all Canadians," added Weshler.
By connecting riders and drivers through the use of a smartphone application, Uber is revolutionizing the way people access their cities around the world. At prices up to 30 percent less than a taxi fare, uberX is Uber's low-cost ridesharing option, offering reliable on-demand transportation choices at the touch of a button. uberX partners with licensed drivers who use their own personal vehicles to give their neighbours a ride.
All Canadian rideshare drivers who partner with Uber must undergo a Royal Canadian Mounted Police and local police background check, and thorough review of their motor vehicle records. Every ride on the uberX platform in Canada is backed by $5 million of contingent auto liability insurance covering bodily injury and property damage.
