As one of the first global event organisers to be certified by an independent third party to this International Standard, UBM Live has now gained certification for nine of its brands including Ecobuild, Medtec Europe & Sudtec, the Protection & Management Series and CPhI Worldwide.
ISO 20121 focuses on working towards embedding sustainability into the very heart of how an organisation does business with the aim of leaving a positive legacy behind. This was achieved for Internet World through critically analysing and working to reduce environmental impact and dedicating skills, expertise and support to the local communities it works with.
"We are proud to be among the first UBM events to have gained this important standard" said Adrian Newton, Group Director for the Transport & Technology portfolio. "Having launched London Technology Week this year, the diversity and community driven opportunities associated with Internet World were considerable. It's been an incredibly exciting year for the tech team here and we're very much looking forward to sharing our plans in continuing the legacy we've started to build for 2015 and beyond."
Highlights from Internet World's sustainability achievements are based on three areas:
Community & Charitable Giving achieved through supporting the startup community by providing free exhibition space to 15 early-stage tech businesses in the # Startup15 Showcase; encouraging diversity through a new partnership with Salt - hosted a series of diversity events at Internet World including a women in tech panel debate and were appointed official diversity partner for London Technology Week; highlighting of youth education through various London Technology Week events including Lives Not Knives and Techday- Bridging the Digital Divide for Children & Young People; and the promotion of charitable giving through staff volunteering their time to support local school reading projects and Apps for Good initiatives.
Waste & Carbon Mitigation achieved through 'designing out' waste from event features and theatres; working with contractors to increase the proportion of waste recycled; a reduction of energy usage through energy efficient lighting; an increase in digital signage and the production and distribution of fewer printed materials including marketing collateral and event guides, all of which were printed on 100% recycled paper.
Political Agenda & Market Sustainability achieved through a relocation to ExCeL London which is located in East London and therefore better serves high-growth 'tech' catchment audiences; the management funding and launch of London Technology Week - a festival of more than 200 tech events attracting 40,000+ participants; the commitment to Internet World acting as 'founding and flagship event' of London Technology Week and hosting 18 of its events within the exhibition itself; and the development of new strategic tech partnerships including with the Mayor's office, London & Partners, Tech London Advocates & Tech City UK.
UBM Live is leading the way in sustainability within the events industry and will continue looking for innovative, sustainable solutions in order to push boundaries for continued success.
