UK's Anti-Trump Folk Troubadour "BEANS ON TOAST" Returns to SF on September 27
Controversial Folk Singer is "a master of his craft" says Frank Turner
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- BEANS ON TOAST, the self-confessed drunken folk singer from London, will return to San Francisco for a performance at Amnesia Beer and Music Hall on September 27.
A regular at clubs and festivals in Europe, "Beans," whose real name is Jay McAllister, is best known for his provocative lyrics that offer sharp criticisms on issues like gentrification, fracking, and recently, the Brexit. In his song "A Whole Lot of Loving," he calls the UK Independence Party "Homophobic racists, sending junk-mails full of hate to your front door." He turns the statement into a funny pop tune, declaring, "I'm not worried about the worries of the world anymore. I'm gonna get in the Jacuzzi."
In his ten-plus year career of touring in the US and UK, Beans has won a cult following, including among some of Britain's biggest names in music. "The phenomenon of Beans On Toast has quite literally been life changing for me," gushes hardcore-singer turned acoustic-rocker Frank Turner. "Jay showed me how powerful a few chords on an acoustic guitar could be, and in so doing changed my whole musical direction in life. He's a master of his craft."
Mumford and Sons banjo player Winston Marshall echoes those sentiments. "No musical act touring today better articulates what it is to be British than he does. Prolific and profane, three chords and the truth."
Beans arrives in the US just in time for an election perfectly suited to his profane commentary. In a mostly ad-libbed performance from 2015 called "The Trump Song," he describes the GOP Presidential nominee as "a villain from a [expletive] 90's cartoon."
With loads of new material to draw from, San Francisco's audience is bound to get a taste of why CLASH called him one of the most controversial acts at 2016's Glastonbury Festival.
Beans on Toast will perform at Amnesia on September 27 at 9pm. San Jose folk singer Brad Sanzenbacher supports.
