Ultrasonic Welding And Cleaning Equipment - Types, Applications, New Developments, Industry Structure And Global Markets
LONDON, March 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Ultrasonic welding makes use of piezoelectric transducers that produce ultrasonic vibrations for transfer to a solid medium to generate heat to melt and weld thermoplastics and some light alloy metals. In order to perform melting and welding on plastics and other materials, the longitudinal vibrations on the end faces of a transducer must be amplified and concentrated onto a small area. A device used for this purpose is variously called an amplitude transformer, a sonodyne, or simply a horn.

Ultrasonic cleaning, in contrast, makes use of ultrasonic transducers that produce ultrasonic vibrations for transfer to a liquid medium (usually water or an organic solvent mixture) to create cavitation or a partial vacuum. The basic principles of ultrasonic cavitation and its application to cleaning are well known. Cavitation "bubbles" are created in liquids in the rarefaction portion of an ultrasonic sound wave.
These "bubbles" then collapse in the following compression cycle of the sound wave, generating minute areas of high temperature and pressure. This enhances the cleaning process in two ways – by causing the physical displacement of contaminants due to the force generated by the imploding cavitation bubble, and by forcing liquid exchange across interface boundaries, which promotes dissolution of soluble contaminants by suitable "solvents." It is logical to assume that the effectiveness of the cleaning process is related to the intensity of the ultrasonic field and the resulting implosions of cavitation bubbles.
The ultrasonic welding product section targets three distinctly different welding processes – plastic welding, metal welding, and sealing and sewing of fibers and fabrics.
The ultrasonic cleaning product section targets three types of tank categories – table top, bench top and large capacity industrial cleaners – catering to different applications, different sizes and geometrical shapes of parts, and using different liquid cleaning media.
The two product groups covered – ultrasonic welding and ultrasonic cleaning – basically originate from transducers that generate piezoelectric vibration, operating at different frequencies using different grades of ceramics.
