United, Continental Union Leaders Respond to United Q2 Earnings
Jul 21, 2011, 03:35 ET
CHICAGO and HOUSTON, July 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement by Captain Wendy Morse, Chairman, United Master Executive Council, and Captain Jay Pierce, Chairman, Continental Master Executive Council Air Line Pilots Association, International regarding United Continental Holding's Q2 earnings report:
Captain Wendy Morse: "It was clear from the UAL Q2 earnings conference call that airline analysts are concerned with the negative implications of the company dragging out contact negotiations with pilots and other employee groups. If senior management honestly wants to build a corporate culture on which to build the world's leading airline, then they have to be as serious about reaching contracts with their employees as they were securing contracts for themselves more than 12 months ago."
Captain Jay Pierce: "We're surprised and disappointed at Mr. Smisek's comments. Since February, when the mediator from the National Mediation Board joined negotiations, we've been meeting every week to negotiate and have been making progress. We see no reason to delay getting a deal that will enable the benefits of this merger to be shared with our pilots and other airline employees, our passengers and the shareholders. We are certainly doing our part at the bargaining table and we remain fully committed to reaching agreement on a new contract that meets the needs of our pilots. We're ready to get it done."
