Over 80% of the population is likely to suffer from low back pain at some point in their lives. A majority of these cases can be attributed to two main causes: general factors such as muscle strain, injury and overuse; and specific spine conditions such as herniated discs, degenerative disc disease (DDD), spondylolisthesis or spinal stenosis. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction (SIJD) was once thought to be a less common cause for lower back pain. However, recent studies have shown that SIJD may be responsible for up to 25% of lower back pain.
The sacroiliac (SI) joint is within the pelvis, between the sacrum and ilium, and is held together by strong ligaments. The SI joint is a strong, weight-bearing synovial joint with unique elevations that form an interlocking interface. Humans have two SI joints, one on either side of the sacrum. A primary function of the SI joint is shock absorption for the spine, as well as torque conversion, allowing transverse rotations in the lower extremities to be transferred up the spine.
