United Technologies Climate, Controls & Security Employees Volunteer for Second Annual Green Apple Day of Service
FARMINGTON, Conn., Sept. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Rooted in the belief that green building will accelerate with education, United Technologies Climate, Controls & Security employees are proud to share their message of sustainability through upcoming volunteer projects with area schools as part of the second annual Green Apple Day of Service. United Technologies Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), is a leading provider of integrated building solutions, including heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, building controls and automation, and fire and security systems.
Created in 2012 by the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Center for Green Schools, the day of service provides an opportunity to transform schools into healthy, safe and productive learning environments through local service projects. From updating Illinois classrooms with environmentally friendly paint to planting a garden at a Tennessee school, employees from the company's world headquarters, Carrier and Taylor businesses will complete projects in four states. Their efforts will help provide a sustainable environment for the 25 percent of Americans who go to school every day as students, faculty, staff and administrators.
"We have a great opportunity to not only make our schools showcases for energy efficiency, but optimal environments for full learning potential," said John Mandyck, chief sustainability officer, United Technologies Climate, Controls & Security. "Green schools will save operating costs, lower environmental footprints and improve the learning performance for a generation of students."
"As the Center for Green Schools' Founding Sponsor, United Technologies has played a critical role in supporting the Center's mission to put every student in a green school within this generation," added Rachel Gutter, director, Center for Green Schools at USGBC. "Thanks to United Technologies' leadership and ongoing support, the Center leads a movement that has already placed millions of students in healthy, high-performing learning environments."
In addition to six events in Connecticut, Illinois, New York and Tennessee, Carrier, a part of United Technologies Climate, Controls & Security, is supporting the cause internationally, with four upcoming projects in Asia and India.
"By hosting Green Apple Day of Service projects throughout the country and internationally, United Technologies is demonstrating its commitment to its employees and customers by making a real, tangible and immediate difference at schools within the communities it serves," added Gutter.
Carrier, a pioneer in sustainability, was instrumental in launching the USGBC in 1993 and was the first company in the world to join the organization. In 2010, Carrier became the first company to license USGBC's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED) curriculum to train employees and customers in sustainable building practices. Carrier is now one of the USGBC's largest global partners for LEED education.
