UnLock Our Jobs Statement on the Preliminary Finding of One Silver Carp in the Illinois Waterway
ST. LOUIS, June 26, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- UnLock Our Jobs (UOJ), a coalition of business and industry organizations dedicated to supporting the U.S. economy through the advancement of environmentally friendly domestic maritime commerce, June 23 released the following statement on the announced preliminary finding of one silver carp in the Illinois Waterway below T.J. O'Brien Lock and Dam:
"Earlier today the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee (ACRCC) announced the preliminary finding of one silver carp in the Illinois Waterway below T.J. O'Brien Lock and Dam. As stated by the ACRCC release, this preliminary finding in no way confirms that there is a reproducing population of Asian carp above the electric dispersal barriers or in the Great Lakes."
"There is an established process in place to ensure that any preliminary findings are thoroughly analyzed to understand each individual scenario. We await the results of the latest scientific analysis to provide additional information about this silver carp including its age, diet, and other biological markers. In 2010, similar monitoring efforts resulted in the finding of a bighead carp in Lake Calumet. Scientific analysis determined that the bighead carp did not originate from the Mississippi River basin system or migrate by the waterways to reach that point."
"We await the results of the scientific process and the results of additional monitoring efforts by the IDNR and ACRCC."
