ATLANTA, Nov. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Since the catastrophic, 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010 killing more than 200,000 people, the country has struggled to regain its form. Many important infrastructures such as hospitals and municipal buildings were destroyed. There have been efforts made by different humanitarian groups since the tragedy. However, if one visits the country today, one can clearly see the need for more restoration. Today, the capital city, Port Au Prince, still has the remnants of crumbled infrastructure, and is still filled with hundreds of thousands of people who are displaced from their homes.
Haitian descendant, Ravel Dupiton, Co-Founder of UpArt Socks, wanted to create a way to draw awareness to the ongoing needs of Haiti. He explains, "People will always admire fashion. I wanted to combine my love of that with a way to help efforts in Haiti." He then joined efforts with fellow Haitian-American designer Ugens Toussaint, Co-Founder of UpArt Socks, and worked on custom sock designs and sunglasses made of out 100% Bamboo.
UpArt Socks has teamed up with HelpForHaiti, a non-profit organization that works to feed and educate families, while helping rebuild infrastructures within the country. For every sock purchased, there will be a pair donated to an individual in need through HelpForHaiti. For each pair of sunglasses purchased, we will donate a portion of the proceeds towards an already developing bamboo nursery. Since bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world, we hope this will help with restoring and rebuilding some of what this beautiful country has lost at a more rapid pace.
"When people look good, they feel good," said Dupiton, whose custom-designed socks feature a self-adjusting welt cuff and seamless toe closure in an assortment of styles and colors. "This is our small way to not only help people look good, but to help them feel good as well by making a contribution toward helping people who need help."
