Upper Glass Wine Club Launches In Greater Boston
Startup Partners with Boston's Top Sommeliers to Deliver Hidden-Gem Wines
BOSTON, July 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Upper Glass, a Charlestown-based wine selection and delivery service, is pleased to announce its debut, hand-delivering its monthly picks to customers throughout the greater Boston area.
The first-ever wine club curated by Boston's top sommeliers, Upper Glass partners with the city's most beloved restaurants and wine experts to identify unique and interesting wines that taste like they should cost more. Its monthly offering, priced at $80 per month, includes four bottles hand-delivered to customers at their homes or offices, along with the sommelier's notes about the wine and the vineyard. Recent curators include Kari Cooney of the award-winning Brewer's Fork in Charlestown, and Peter Nelson of renowned locavore favorite Puritan & Company in Cambridge.
Todd Lipman, head sommelier at Back Bay's Bistro du Midi, is July's guest wine curator. Recognized as Boston's Best Sommelier three times by local media, Todd's wine program has won Wine Spectator's "Best Of" Award of Excellence eight years running. Todd also serves as Wine Director for the Nantucket Wine & Food Festival and the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival.
"This is the wine club we wanted to join. It didn't exist, so we started it ourselves," explains founder David Garlough, a former technology executive. He launched Upper Glass with assistance from his wife Donna, a former Boston Magazine food editor and current style director at Wayfair.com. "We love discovering quirky and underrated wines, especially at our favorite restaurants," says Garlough. "But as busy professionals with young children, we weren't getting that experience as often as we used to."
Adds Garlough, "Staring down bottles in a retail store is intimidating and time-consuming. We found ourselves guessing or defaulting to bottles we recognized—with varying degrees of success. Our curators pick high quality wines, typically from artisan producers using natural farming methods, so our customers can drink great wine any day of the week without spending a ton of money."
Garlough created Upper Glass to make discovering wine fun again, he says. "We're thrilled to be launching at this experimental time in e-commerce and wine retail, and we're excited to see the business grow and evolve."
