MONDAY, APRIL 12: HIGHEST WIND
Profile America -- Monday, April 12th. Spring often brings some windy days but rarely anything like that on this date in 1934. That day, the observatory at the top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire recorded an astonishing gust of wind at 231 miles-an-hour -- the highest ever recorded on the face of the earth. The next year, nature delivered a runner-up as a hurricane hit the Florida Keys with 200 mile an hour gusts. For comparison, winds in a category F5 tornado range up to 318 miles an hour. Chicago is known as the Windy City, but its average annual wind speed of a little over 10 miles an hour is behind Cheyenne, Wyoming, at nearly 13. Profile America is presented by the U.S. Census Bureau, reminding you -- take part in the 2010 Census and put your census form in the mail.
