TUESDAY, MARCH 9: FIRST STATE COLLEGE FOR WOMEN
Profile America — Tuesday, March 9th, noting Women's History Month. The first state college for women was created this week in 1884 in Mississippi. Classes opened in the fall of the next year on the campus of a former college in Columbus. Known as the Mississippi Industrial Institute and College, it was later renamed as the Mississippi State College for Women. Now, the school is called the Mississippi University for Women. While it has been co-educational nearly 30 years, the curriculum continues to stress opportunities for women. Across the U.S. today, women students outnumber males on college campuses by just over 2.5 million.
