WASHINGTON, March 9, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau:
DOG LICENSING
Profile America — Thursday, March 9th. "Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful." Whatever is the merit in the remark by the late advice columnist Ann Landers, there are few bonds of esteem stronger than that between owners and their dogs. But that relationship comes with responsibilities, including one set this week in 1894, when the first statewide dog license law was enacted by New York. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was designated to carry out the provisions of the law. In big cities, the fee was $2 a year. There are an estimated 78 million dogs in U.S. households. Devoted dog owners spend an annual average of over $1,400 on visits to the nation's 30,600 veterinary services offices. Profile America is in its 20th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
