WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10: EDMUND FITZGERALD SINKS
Profile America — Wednesday, November 10th. The big Great Lakes ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior 35 years ago today, killing all 29 men aboard. The event will be marked in several solemn observances honoring those lost. The Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a sudden gale only a few miles from safety. Carrying 26,000 tons of iron ore, it was the largest ship on the lake. The tragedy sparked an immensely popular song by Gordon Lightfoot. Now more than 160 million tons of cargo crisscross the Great Lakes each year, part of the more than 2.5 billion tons of freight carried on the nation's waterways. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
