TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2: ELECTION DAY
Profile America — Tuesday, November 2nd. Today is general election day across the nation, with all 435 seats in the House of Representatives on the line as well as one-third of the 100 seats in the Senate, often in sharply contested campaigns. It is also the 90th anniversary of the day in 1920 when women were allowed to vote for the first time in U.S. history in national elections. Ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution followed a 70-year-long struggle for women's suffrage, which raised deep passions on both sides of the issue. In the last congressional election year — 2006 — 44.7 percent of eligible women reported that they voted, compared with 42.4 percent of men.
