SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 7: NEW YORK CITY MARATHON
Profile America — Sunday, November 7th. More than 2.5 million spectators are expected to line the route today for the 41st annual New York City Marathon. They'll see 38,000 athletes from all around the world competing in what has become the best known marathon on the globe. The top male runner last year was American Meb Keflezighi, originally from Eritrea, while the female winner was Derartu Tulu from Ethiopia. The first New York City Marathon was held in 1970, with just 55 runners crossing the finish line cheered by an audience of 100. Now close to 26,000 young men and women compete in cross-country events during college, while across the nation more than 30 million enjoy running and jogging.
