WASHINGTON, Sept. 28, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau:
LOS ANGELES FOUNDED
Profile America — Wednesday, September 28th. Los Angeles was founded by the royal Spanish governor of California 235 years ago this month. The town had grown to some 650 residents when the Mexican Revolution overthrew Spanish colonial rule in 1821. California was among the territories ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican-American War, and became a state in 1850. At that time, the Los Angeles population was just over 1,600. Now, the city has a population of over 3.9 million people, while Los Angeles County is home to nearly 10.2 million. Nearly half that population—4.9 million—is Hispanic, making the county home to nearly 9 percent of the nation's Hispanic residents.
