LONDON, Oct. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- US demand to rise 3.8%annually through 2018
Demand for coated fabrics in the US isprojected to advance 3.8 percent per yearto 725 million square yards in 2018, anacceleration from sluggish gains postedduring the 2008 to 2013 period. Reboundingconstruction expenditures willprovide opportunities for coated fabricsused in products that are closely tied tobuilding activity, such as wallcoverings, furniture, and awnings and canopies. Invalue terms, demand for coated fabrics isforecast to increase five percent per yearto $4 billion in 2018, benefiting from anacceleration in area demand as well asmoderate price increases. However, pricing gains will be limited due toincreased competition from lower costimports.
Key motor vehicle marketto see accelerating growth
The largest market for coated fabrics in2013 was motor vehicles, with 30 percentof the total, benefiting from the largenumber of light vehicles that are producedin the US each year. Goingforward, growth will accelerate from ahigh 2013 base that reflects a recovery invehicle production. Still, advances will bepropelled by the increased incorporationof polyvinyl-coated and polyurethanecoatedfabrics in upholstery and interiortrim in light vehicles. In these applications, coated fabrics are aided by continuedimprovements in appearance andfeel, placing further competitive pressureson alternative materials. Gains willalso be promoted by a higher number ofairbags per light truck and van throughthe forecast period. Silicone-coatedfabrics are typically used in the manufactureof airbags.
Coated polyester to continueas leading substrate
Coated fabrics are categorized based onthe substrate or coating used. Versionswith polyester substrates accounted forapproximately 45 percent of total UScoated fabric demand in 2013. Thesesubstrates are valued for their versatilityat a relatively low cost. While used in avariety of markets, three markets (motorvehicles, industrial, and furniture) accountfor approximately half of coatedpolyester sales. Above-average gains inthe furniture market will provide opportunities. In addition, demand for coatedpolyester will benefit from its use in otherabove-average growth markets, such aswallcoverings, and awnings and canopies.
Polymer-coated fabrics toremain dominant products
Polymer-coated fabrics dominated coatedfabric demand in 2013, and will continueto do so through 2018. Within this category,vinyl-coated fabrics account for thelargest share -- 40 percent -- of demand.Going forward, vinyl-coated fabrics willretain their significant position due totheir adequate performance characteristicsprovided at a relatively low cost.Among the major types of polymercoatedfabrics, polyurethane-coatedfabrics are expected to post the fastestgains through 2018. Improvements inpolyurethane coatings, particularly intheir appearance and feel when cured, will boast opportunities. The rubbercoatedfabrics product category is muchsmaller, but growth will benefit from theusage of silicone varieties in the largemarket for airbags. Advances will befastest for fabric-backed wallcoverings, which will recover in line with the reboundin the building construction sector, especially in the institutional and officesegments where these wallcoverings findsignificant use.
