U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Appoints New Jersey State Advisory Committee Members
WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has appointed 19 New Jersey citizens to its New Jersey State Advisory Committee (SAC).
Martin Dannenfelser, Staff Director of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, announced the appointment of Leanna Y. Brown of Chatham, Richard F. Collier, Jr. of Montgomery Township, Jane R. Dunhamn of Plainsboro, Sherine El-Abd of Clifton, Lora L. Fong of Edison, Brian M. Gaffney of Morristown, Joan M. Garry of Montclair, John J. Hart of Lumberton, Shavar D. Jeffries of Newark, Beth Ann Jones of West Deptford, Lawrence S. Lustberg of Chatham Township, Clement A. Price of Newark, Saulo Santiago of Jersey City, Judd A. Serotta of Cherry Hill, Morris G. Smith of Collingswood, William J. Stephney of Randolph Township, Frank D. Tinari of Florham Park, Jackson Toby of Highland Park, and Peter W. Wood of West Windsor. The Commission appointed William J. Stephney as chairman. The appointments are for two years, and members serve without compensation.
Congress has directed the Commission to establish advisory committees in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to study issues and forward advisory reports to the Commission on matters within the agency's jurisdiction that reflect the views of the majority of SAC members producing the report.
The SACs' reports to the Commission are wholly independent, and are reviewed by Commission staff only for legal and procedural compliance with Commission policies and procedures. SAC reports are not subject to Commission approval, fact-checking or policy changes.
The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights is an independent, bipartisan agency charged with monitoring federal civil rights enforcement. Members include Chairman Gerald A. Reynolds, Vice Chair Abigail Thernstrom, Commissioners Todd Gaziano, Gail Heriot, Peter N. Kirsanow, Arlan D. Melendez, Ashley L. Taylor, Jr., and Michael Yaki.
