JUPITER, Fla., Nov. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Congressional Candidate Paul Spain, Florida District 21, has a way to remediate the Blue Green Algae issue that plagues Lake Okeechobee.
Spain said a consortium of private scientists and process experts have worked for the past three years on developing a logical approach to remediate the Blue Green Algae issue that plagues Lake Okeechobee and adversely affects major fresh water bodies, such as the Great Lakes in the US and Canada.
The remediation process is based on recommendations presented in a technical paper co-authored by Ken Lawton and of Environmental Sense, LLC Edmonton, Alberta Canada, and Anthony Brown, a South Florida native and remedial process expert, said Spain who recommends "we immediately begin to study these remediation processes which have been vetted through the design logic of zero harmful waste and scale feasibility."
Spain said he will propose a three-point $5 million year-long pilot to study the effects and economics of the recommended systems which will be implemented in known algae production hot spots in the lake and waterways.
The purpose of this project is to study practical physical methods to reduce algae blooms in a pilot scale, remove thousands of tons of the harmful algae from Florida's waters, study potential beneficial uses and disposal methods for the removed algae, and to study the effects of managing algae growth to prevent spikes of phosphorus and nitrates which trigger algae blooms in Florida's waterways.
The hard truth about the algae blooms is they are harmful to every thing that swims, including humans and pets, he said.
This practical study marks an important milestone in the overall process to select practical remediation solutions to this problem, which costs St. Lucie County millions in lost tourism and trade over the last few years.
"A government by the people and for the people can work together to solve the most complex issues in America through open dialog using sound business and environmental logic," said Spain.
