Secretary Moniz, a nuclear physicist by training, became the nation's 13th energy secretary in May 2013. Prior to becoming Energy Secretary, Dr. Moniz* held several U.S. government advisory positions. From 1997 to 2001 during the Clinton Administration, he was U.S. under secretary of energy and earned a reputation as an outspoken proponent of nuclear energy and natural gas. Before his government career, Secretary Moniz was the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was a faculty member since 1973.
