US-Kurdistan Business Council Hosts Top KRG Officials in Washington, DC
WASHINGTON, July 7, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The United States-Kurdistan Business Council (USKBC) hosted two top Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) officials in Washington in a closed-door meeting last week. Dr. Fuad Hussein, Chief of Staff for President Barzani, and Dr. Falah Bakir, head of the Department of Foreign Relations met with the USKBC while the delegation was in town.
Dr. Hussein and Dr. Bakir spoke to the USKBC about the current situation in Iraq. They discussed the ISIS crisis and how the Kurds are dealing with the threat of terrorism and defending their territory.
Dr. Hussein stated that the KRG is proud to have formed a broad-based government and formed a joint-KRG negotiation team with Baghdad. "We are seeing signs of progress, political maturity and are anticipating problems."
Dr. Bakir stated that the Kurds want to go back to old times and have a unified Iraq built on the basis of the constitution and federalism. He discussed how protecting the security of the region is a primary concern, and the Kurds are protecting their territory, their border, and their people.
Dr. Bakir explained how the Kurds are proud to have an open door policy for refugees, but emphasized that it is not easy to take care of 6.5 million people and that international assistance is needed to help care for the many refugees and IDPs.
Dr. Bakir also discussed the U.S.-Kurdistan relationship. "We consider ourselves friends of the U.S. and we want to stay friends with the U.S." He stated that if the U.S. could produce a plan or policy for the current situation, the Kurds would be ready to discuss it.
