LONDON, Oct. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
INTRODUCTION
This study examines the US market for electric lighting fixtures.
Products covered include nonportable fixtures (vehicular-type, outdoor,
industrial-type, and other indoor), portable fixtures (fixtures that are plugged
into ordinary wall sockets and thus can generally be moved easily, as well as
consumer lighting products such as flashlights), and separately sold parts and
accessories for lighting fixtures. Because lamp ballasts make up an important
portion of the parts and accessories sector and are central to certain market
trends, numbers are presented for both aftermarket and original equipment
manufacturer (OEM) shipments. The study does not cover lamps (i.e., light
bulbs or LED light engines), sealed beam automotive headlamps or related
wiring devices, or dimming controls and related devices. However, for lighting
fixtures manufactured to include a nonreplaceable LED light engine (e.g.,
center high-mounted stop lights on motor vehicles) the cost of the light source
is included. Demand for lighting fixtures is also provided by market, including
indoor and outdoor construction applications (residential, office and
commercial, industrial, institutional, and other buildings; and nonbuilding
construction), vehicles and machinery (motor vehicles, off-highway vehicles,
and nonautomotive transportation equipment), and consumer and commercial
(table lamps, desk lamps, floor lamps, flashlights, and fixtures that are built into
furniture or appliances). In addition, the study discusses demand by US region.
Major manufacturers of lighting fixtures are also identified and profiled, and the
key industry competitive variables are discussed. The entire report is framed
within the lighting fixture industry's economic, technological, and market
environments.
Historical data for 2003, 2008, and 2013 and forecasts for 2018 and 2023
are provided in current dollars for lighting fixture demand, imports, exports, and
shipments. As used in this study, the term "sales" is synonymous with
"demand" and is equivalent to lighting fixture production plus imports, less
exports. Shipments for OEM ballasts are also presented for informational
purposes, but are not added to total lighting fixture shipments to avoid double
counting. Dollar values for lighting fixture demand are presented at the
manufacturers' level.
In this study, lighting fixture demand is related to various indicators in
the tables (e.g., gross domestic product and construction expenditures). The
macroeconomic indicators used in this study were obtained from The Freedonia
Group Consensus Forecasts dated April 2014. Because of the Bureau of
Economic Analysis' use of chain-weighted price indexes, inflation-adjusted
Gross Domestic Product components (2009 dollars) do not necessarily add to
the total. Tabular details may not add to totals due to rounding, and some ratios
are based on unrounded numbers.
Information and data on lighting fixtures were obtained from a variety of
primary and secondary sources, including government publications, trade
associations (e.g., American Lighting Association, National Electrical
Manufacturers Association, and National Lighting Bureau), industry
participants, online databases, and other Freedonia studies. Historical data are
based on US Bureau of Census figures, including the Economic Census and
Annual Survey of Manufactures. These and supporting data were adjusted as
necessary in light of consultation with personnel of participating companies and
other industry contacts. Secondary data and background information were
obtained from various trade publications, including Automotive News, Builder,
Building Design + Construction, Contract Design, Electrical Construction &
Maintenance, Electrical Contractor, Electrical Product News, Home Channel
News, Home Furnishings News, Lighting Design & Application, and
Professional Builder. Corporate annual reports, SEC Form 10-K filings,
product catalogs, and other company-provided information were used
extensively in framing the industry environment and as input for market size
assessment.
