This market includes handheld slit lamps and table mounted slit lamps. The total market is expected to throughout the forecast, with handhelds slightly outpacing the growth of the table mounted market thus gaining some share. Table mounted slit lamps can then be further segmented into low-end (Zeiss Style) or high-end (Haag-Streit style) slit lamps.
The high value of the market for high-mount slit lamps was due to both high unit sales and ASP. High-end slit lamps are preferred over low-end systems by ophthalmologists. The market leader for high-end slit lamps is Haag-Streit. Because of their strong position in the high-end slit lamp market, these devices are often referred to as "Haag-Streit type" slit lamps.
Low-end slit lamps are often referred to as "Zeiss type" slit lamps because Carl Zeiss Meditec were the first to use this style of slit lamp. Low-end slit lamps are typically purchased by opticians and optometrists.
The market for slit lamps exhibits several notable characteristics. For example, in contrast to the markets for OCT and fundus cameras, where sales and distribution are most frequently managed directly by manufacturers or through exclusive distribution agreements, slit lamps are commonly sold by non-exclusive distributors. In addition, it is common for companies to have slit lamps made outside of their local markets, frequently in Asia. The devices are then imported and branded in the domestic market.
Slit lamps are binocular microscopes that are coupled with illumination systems. Slit lamps are used for diagnosing a wide variety of eye conditions including cataracts, corneal injuries, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, dry eye syndrome, retinitis pigmentosa and uveitis. Basic slit lamps are used for observing anterior eye segment structures including the eyelid, cornea, lens and iris. The addition of special lenses to the slit lamps provides for the ability to view intraocular and posterior regions of the eye. Other accessories for slit lamps include ocular and objective lenses, contact tonometers, background illuminators, beam splitters and digital imaging equipment.
