U.S. Nonwovens Offers Surface Antimicrobial Disinfectants In Accordance With CDC For Ebola Virus Infection
BRENTWOOD, N.Y., Nov. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Nonwovens Corp. (USN), reported today that their arsenal of disinfectant formulas are in accordance with CDC guidance and can be used to disinfect surfaces with suspected or confirmed Ebola virus infection.
The Ebola virus belongs to a virus family called Filoviridae and can cause severe hemorrhagic fever in humans and nonhuman primates. Ebola has a mortality rate ranging from 50% to 90% according to the World Health Organization. The virus is highly prioritized by the U.S. Government, who has defined the virus as a "Category A" agent, due to its high mortality rate. Currently, no licensed vaccine, treatment or cure exists for this disease. Researchers in NIAID's Division of Intramural Research and Vaccine Research Center as well as NIAID-supported scientists at external institutions are studying all aspects of Ebola and Marburg viruses and how they cause disease. This includes seeking better ways to diagnose and treat Ebola and Marburg fevers, and using applied research to develop diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics. In the meantime, The National Institute of Health, NIH is conducting vaccine trials being developed.
According to Jake Ludlow R&D Engineer 3, Antimicrobials, at USN, "It is much harder to destroy non-enveloped viruses than enveloped viruses like Ebola. USN is working on other delivery methods such as, swabs, vapors, triggers, aerosols, & wipes under R&D." Enveloped viruses such as Ebola are susceptible to a broad range of hospital disinfectants used to disinfect hard, non-porous surfaces. Non-enveloped viruses are more resistant to disinfectants. U.S. Nonwovens disinfectant products have a higher potency than what is normally required for an enveloped virus, such as Ebola.
According to the CDC, the Ebola virus can stay infective for up to 6 days on surfaces in ideal conditions. Attention to rigorous disinfection practices is essential. The
Some of the products efficacious against <norovirus, rotavirus, poliovirus> which are also EPA-registered hospital disinfectants, within FIFRA guidelines, can be found under the RediWipes™ Brand nationally as well as in various hospitals or retail store label brands such as Walmart's Great Value Wipes. According to CDC guidance, "these products can be used to disinfect environmental surfaces in rooms of patients with suspected or confirmed Ebola virus infection." USN is working hard to fulfill its social contributions.
